Jake Gyllenhaal, an Esquire Interview with Hollywood’s Leading Man
Jake Gyllenhaal lands another cover of mens magazine, Esquire UK. 36-year-old actor Jake Gyllenhaal has spent most of his life on the big screen. Debuting in 1991 with an appearance in City Slickers, Gyllenhaal’s childhood also includes 1983’s Dangerous Woman 1983 and Homegrown (1998). However, it is his role of Homer Hickman in the 1999 blockbuster, October Sky, that wins him early critical acclaim. Since then, life for the actor has been a consistent schedule of memorable films. Titles like Donnie Darko, The Day After Tomorrow, Zodiac, and Brothers all earn Jake Gyllenhaal recognition from fans and critics. Perhaps, his most pivotal role is his character Twist Lee, in the 2005 Academy-Award winning film, Brokeback Mountain.
Lensed by photographer David Slijper, Gyllenhaal poses for a candid series of portraits. Simple styling from menswear brands like Dolce & Gabbana, Jake Gyllenhaal shows off a slick-back hairstyle and full beard. Overall, the images have a classic, masculine feel. Inside the issue, the enigmatic actor gets personal for an exclusive interview.
“I’m not very interested in what I think because I’m a wealthy white male.”
“I’ve grown up thinking somewhere that if you’re really doing something great it has to be punishing in some sort of way,” he tells Esquire. Gyllenhaal reflects on growing up in the Gyllenhaal family alongside older sister Maggie. Stephen Gyllenhaal, his dad, is a director and Naomi Foner, his mom is a screenwriter. “I’ve moved from that. After a few years of really pushing in different areas, pushing my body physically, pushing my mind, going a little too far in spaces, I’ve realized that joy is a huge part of it.”
The Donnie Darko star also shares an honest insight about Donald Trump, race, and politics during the 2016 presidential election. “I’m not very interested in what I think because I’m a wealthy white male,” he says, “and right now what’s important is not what I think. But I will say I don’t like it when people say, ‘You shouldn’t hear what an actor has to say about something, let the politicians talk’, because the irony is that we have elected a celebrity as a president, so as a result that doesn’t work any more.”
