23 year old singer and past Calvin Klein model Nick Jonas covers the June/July 2016 issue of OUT magazine with a message to share with fans everywhere. It’s may be a few weeks before the singer’s highly anticipated album, Last Year Was Complicated, is released, but it seems that he wants to clear the air about a few trending topics as he sits down with OUT to discuss everything from rumors of “gay-baiting” fans to his process of writing songs about his breakups.
Photographed by Doug English, Jonas poses in a series of All-American images styled in casual Spring/Summer 2016 collection pieces from brands including, Hermes, Dior Hommes, and Louis Vuitton. Shot both on location with backdrops of green, welcoming warmer months and in studio, the star offers us a candid look into his personality.
Inside the issue, Jonas takes things a step further as he answers a few candid questions. See below for some of our highlights from the exclusive interview.
On Jay Z naming his album Complicated:
“When I was working on this album, Jay Z asked me what it was about. I said it was about the past year of my life, and that the year was complicated. Jay Z said, ‘That’s the name of your album: Complicated.’”
On his Pivotal Role on Kingdom as a Man Struggle with Sexuality
“It’s been a great character to play,” says Jonas, “one that I try to be respectful of and take myself out of. He’s on his own path.”
On accusations of “gay-baiting” to attract fans
“It’s not the majority, but a large handful have a negative opinion for whatever reason,” he says, “and I think it’s really quite sad.”
On Being Inspired by his Breakup with former Miss USA Olivia Culpo
“With this one I made a real point to tell stories as honestly as I could,” Jonas tells me. “It became very clear what it was going to be about, after the breakup. I just dove in headfirst and wrote about all of it. I think it was the most meaningful relationship I’ve ever been in, and it was the longest.”
